Meet local writer Selim Özdogan with his English translators Ayça Türkoglu and Katy Derbyshire.

One woman’s life: from a childhood in rural Turkey to a semi-arranged marriage, to years of hard work in Germany while raising her children, to personal turmoil in retirement. Selim Özdogan’s Anatolian Blues trilogy tells the story of Gül, a warm-hearted woman who people confide in, a woman who loves and suffers deeply and yet leads a life like many thousands of others.

To celebrate the launch of the third book, A Light Still Burns, Selim Özdogan will be in conversation with his English translators all about writing, translating, parenting, working, ageing – and perhaps most importantly, music and literature. Followed by a very special DJ session with the writer himself on the decks in the bar.

Selim Özdogan was born in Germany in 1971 and has been publishing books since 1995. Apart from writing he likes being on stage, practicing yoga and drinking coffee, and is constantly trying to find ways to express the life within him.
Ayça Türkoglu is a literary translator from German and Turkish. Her work has been shortlisted for the Helen & Kurt Wolff Translator’s Prize. She lives in North London. Born in London and based in Berlin for more than twenty years, Katy Derbyshire translates contemporary German writers. Her published work includes books by Clemens Meyer, Christa Wolf, Heike Geissler and Olga Grjasnowa.
